1. RECOGNIZE THAT DRESSING WELL IS A SKILL
Hello George
Just like cooking or shooting free kicks, dressing well is a skill that can be learned.
My job as a personal stylist is not to buy men's clothing and ship it.TaughtMen how to choose clothes that flatter them so they can do it themselves. Dress wellwas nota skill that can be taught, I would be out of a job!
All skills improve the more you practice. And unless you live in a weird nudist colony (sorry, but if you're a nudist reading this blog you're in the wrong place), you need to get dressed every day. This means that you have the opportunity to practice and cultivate the ability to dress well.Every day.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:No one is born with a perfectly tailored three-piece suit or a magical intuition about how to dress well. (If you need a reminder, please scroll up and look again at my high school photo.) Keep in mind that dressing well is a skill that can be developed with practice.
2. DEVELOP YOUR “EYE” BY IDENTIFYING THE STYLE YOU WANT
Right after guys tell me they're just not "naturally stylish", I usually get:
"I just don't have an eye for putting together clothes or knowing what looks good"
I tell you this:
"OK. Is there someone whose style you think looks good? Something that makes you think, 'I wish I could dress like that,' even though you think you couldn't. Maybe it's a celebrity, a musician, an athlete? Even a fictional one. Some of my clients have mentioned James Bond or Tony Stark”.
The guy will then list a group of men he thinks dress well. And I want to point out that he has just debunked his own assumption that he has no "eye". He just showed me that he can see and recognize great style!
Well, maybe he doesn't know.Yand that is the reason why people often tell me that he has no eye. Understanding why is understandable.
But whenever you're working toward a goal, it's important to identify and question the stories you're telling yourself. Whether it's because you don't have an eye for style, you're too busy to work out, oryou're just a shy person. The stories we tell ourselves are often invisible barriers that keep us in our comfort zone.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Reserve 5 minutes. Name 3 or more guys whose style you think looks great and goes in the direction you want to go. Even if you think you can't, write it down. It could be someone you know, a celebrity, or even a fictional character from a movie.
3. SOLVE 90% OF YOUR STYLE PROBLEMS BY GETTING THE RIGHT FIT
"¡F*@K Ryan Gosling!"
That's what an actual customer once told me after seeing the Ryan Gosling photo above.
"How the hell does he look so cool in a T-shirt and jeans?"
The answer, my friend, is appropriate.
Personalization is theThe most importantwhen it comes to great style. In fact, it's so important that I tell every one of my clients, "Wearing clothes that fit you well will solve 90% of your style problems."
When clothes don't fit well, it unbalances the body. Clothes that are too big not only make you look sloppy due to excess fabric, but also make you look fatter and smaller than you really are.
Men tend to wear clothes that are too baggy because they "feel more comfortable" or simply don't know how clothes are supposed to fit in the first place.
The right fit is how someone like Ryan Gosling (or me or you) can look effortlessly chic when wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, and like someone in a "nice suit" that probably costs 20 times as much, they can look terrible.
It also means that if you think you need a suit to look stylish, you don't!
If you are more into leather and denim jacket like me, you can wear a leather and denim jacket and still look good as long as you wear clothes that fit well.

4. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE STYLISH PEOPLE (EVEN ONLINE)
When you make a change in your life, especially something physical like your style, the biggest hurdle will be the most surprising.
When it comes to the people around you, your friends and family, your girlfriend, your co-workers, there is a high chance that not everyone will respond positively to your change.
If you as a client want to work with me individually, you must agree to work with me alone. This means that your girlfriend or wife cannot join our meetings or shopping trips.
I came up with this rule after working with a client whose wife insisted that he come to our styling sessions. She gave me feedback on every piece of advice I gave her. Her notes and comments summed it up: "He doesn't like that, he'd rather wear that." I essentially denied any advice he could give.
She allowed his bad style.
After a few weeks I promptly refunded him and created this rule.
Change is uncomfortable for people. It makes them face the reality that someone else is working hard to improve and challenges what they are doing for themselves.
One of my favorite quotes of all time is "You are the average of the 5 people around you." The people we surround ourselves with have a huge influence on our actions, behaviors, and ways of thinking.
This is the reason why rich and successful businessmen tend to be friends with each other. That's why hot crossfitters are surrounded by hot crossfitters in Instagram photos. And that's why overweight parents are more likely to have overweight children.
When it comes to your style, this is what you need if you want to improve. You need to surround yourself with people who have the same goals as you.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:The easiest change you can make is to follow stylish people on places like Instagram. This will have a double impact: it will present you with great style and give you some inspiration, but it will also create an environment where dressing well is 'normal'. Need some fancy Instagram picks?Check out this post I wrote here about my favorite Instagram looks.
5. FOCUS ON A CLASSIC STYLE BEFORE TRYING TO DEVELOP A PERSONAL STYLE
Steve McQueen, classic style, timeless genius
One mistake that people make when trying to improve their style is to think that they need to create an original and 100% unique personal style.
This is a classic example of what is called "extreme thinking."
Do you want to lose 20 kg?
"Ew. I have to give up bread, rice, beer, alcohol, sweets, meat AND I have to do this crazy crossfit workout and spend 2 hours in the gym. Forget it."
Do you want to save money for the holidays?
"It means I have to cancel my Netflix account, stop going out on the weekends, suspend my student loans. I've probably had to stop making some credit card payments if I want to have fun. It'll ruin my credit. I can never relax now in holidays.
As you begin to improve your style, imagine chefs learning to cook:
They don't walk into the kitchen thinking they have to make an amazing, original dish that they've never seen before.
First you will learn the classic recipes and techniques.afterThey begin to add pieces of their personality and interests to give them a twist.
They will do exactly the same with your style.
Focus on classic styles first, then slowly add your personal touch.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:I write about classic styles in my "Essentials" series, you canCheck out all the essentials I've written about so far by clicking here.
6. IT ALSO MEANS SHOPTING CLASSIC STYLES BEFORE GETTING INTERESTED IN TRENDS
Tell me if this sounds familiar:
You open your closet. TheirfullWith clothes.
You rummage through all the hangers you have in your little closet and you think, "I have nothing to wear."
So you go to the mall and buy more clothes.
Then a month later the same thing happens. You have "nothing" to wear.
You won't go crazy.
That's what I call "panic buying." You open your closet and freak out because things are outdated, hard to mix and match, and there are so many options. So you go out and buy more clothes and you compound the problem.
It's a fatal loop. And one of the main reasons for this problem is fashionable clothes.
Translated, modern means what is currently in fashion. All blogs and magazines talk about it. It's what's in the stores. And because it's new and fresh, it's kind of exciting.
But the big problem with any trend is that it eventually fades.
Do you remember how popular leather sweatpants were a few years ago? And the double monks before that? Or if you're old like me, trucker hats?
Fashion clothes are like the summer blockbuster that you can't escape.
Actors are on every talk show. The ad runs continuously. The posters are everywhere. But in the fall we move on.
Classic styles are like classic movies. The Godfather. Return to the future. Coachman. You are not going anywhere.
This is the advantage of classic styles of clothing. You are time tested to look good. A leather jacket, dark blue jeans, boots? It looked great in the 1950s, it still looks great today.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Start changing your shopping habits to find and buy classic styles. What is the difference between something classic and modern? How do you balance classics and trends in your wardrobe?Take a look at this post I wrote that answers this question.
7. STAY FREE OF WILD GRAPHICS, LOGOS AND PRINTS (ONLY TEMPORARILY)
Many Essential Man readers are older professionals (30+) and often ask me, "How can I appear older/more mature/be taken more seriously?"
One way is to stay away from wild graphics, logos, and prints on any type of clothing, whether it's a T-shirt, sweater, or, heaven forbid, pants.
Anytime you wear a t-shirt with a logo or graphic on it, it looks like you're in college or heading to a UFC fight. (Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge MMA fan. But there's a certain style that comes with it.)
I don't care for logos and graphic tees as part of a solid wardrobe, but when you're starting out, wearing solid colors will make you look ten times more mature and serious.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Solid colors and clothing without graphics/logos make you look more sophisticated and mature. The good thing is that this change is an easy trade. Replace your graphic tees and clothing with solid color versions like the examples above.
8. STAY IN SOLID NEUTRAL COLORS
Great examples of neutral color looks
Every man's wardrobe should be based on neutral colors.
What are neutral colors?
These are colors that are not overwhelming. Since they are not intrusive, they blend easily with each other. Bold colors like neon green and orange? Very difficult to work.
If your wardrobe consists entirely of neutral colors, you don't need to know "how to mix and match colors." A neutral wardrobe is essentially self-contained!
Here's the other thing: you probably dress in neutral colors without even knowing it.
Neutral colors are white, black, navy blue, olive green, gray, khaki, brown
Standard Neutral Color Palette
What I love about neutrals, aside from the fact that they work on their own, is that it's a very masculine color palette. It makes you look sophisticated, serious and organized. It also provides the perfect backdrop if you're looking to start adding more color to your wardrobe.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:I recommend a 3:1 ratio when it comes to neutral vs. non-neutral spot colors. Please take 10 minutes to check your locker. Do you have more non-neutral, graphic, and patterned clothing than solid neutrals? Take note to start balancing to achieve a 3:1 ratio.
9. TO UNDERSTAND QUALITY QUICKLY, PLACE YOUR HAND
Why are some cashmere sweaters $100 and others $1,500? Is the $1,500 version really 15 times better?
Is quality clothing worth it?
No doubt these questions have been going through your mind. And my answer is...
Depends on.
it's hard to doanythinggood for little price Whether it's jeans, a laptop or a steak dinner at home. When you have a limited budget to work with, you have to make some compromises.
It is believed that you as a customer are being scammed because designer or high-end clothing is expensive. Sometimes you read people on blogs and forums claiming that they only "pay marketing costs."
I can say that this is not true after working as a menswear designer for 11 years.
Better materials, better construction and design cost more to produce, so it will cost you more to buy.
A perfect example: Cheap jacket zippers can cost as little as $0.50 per zipper. They're lightweight, they can be frustrating, and of course they break easily.
A leather jacket that I designed with a quality RiRi zipper.
When I made leather jackets I used high quality RiRi zippers. They are heavier and almost impossible to break. When you zip the jacket up, it's smooth as butter.
The disadvantage? Sometimes they can cost as much as$20 per zipperfor me as a designer. This means that when the jacket hits stores, that single $20 zipper will add $60 to the price of the jacket, thanks to a standard 3x markup.
That's not marketing, that's math.
But it's hard for you to understand how much better this $1,500 cashmere or zip-up sweater is without trying it on.Likewise, I can say that one of the best meals I have ever eaten cost $220,professional person,No matter how well I describe it, you can't really understand it until you take a bite.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Go to a store that you would consider out of your budget. A place that might even be uncomfortably expensive for you. You don't have to buy anything. Just walk, touch the clothes. Maybe even try something. Make mental notes about how things fit, how they feel, and how you feel when you wear them. Then go to a fast fashion store like Zara or H&M and try on similar items. Write what is different and what is similar. Something surprising?
10. BUY THE BEST QUALITY YOU CAN WITHIN YOUR BUDGET
Which brings us to the question: how much should you spend on clothes?
Very simple, my recommendation to all my clients is to buy the best quality that fits your budget.
If you make 6 figures a year, a $200 pair of jeans might not be much of a problem. But if you're only making $200 a day, there are plenty of great options at lower prices.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:I always recommend J.Crew to start. You can find them in almost every major city, they're classic with a modern twist, and they're solidly priced. See my post for more store recommendations"Where do I personally buy (and what do I buy there)"
11. SAVE TIME DRESSING WITH THE “PULL 3” TRICK
When I go shopping, I always see people going up a size and going back and forth from the showroom to the fitting room.
It infuriates me! It's a waste of time.
Imagine you are cooking a meal at home and you take out one ingredient from the fridge at a time.
I'll show you how to use a trick to cut your shopping time in half.
When putting on garments to try on in the "Tire 3" changing room of the same garment:
One the size you think
one size bigger
one size smaller
So if you buy a pair of jeans and you think they are a 33, pull out a 32 and a 34 and take all three to the fitting room. This saves you walking and is reasonably safe in case it's a new cut or the mark has changed in size.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Use the "draw 3" trick when you go shopping.
12. USE THE "CHANGE TRICK" TO GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
White pants can be
intimidating,
but it looks good when done right. LEFT TO RIGHT: PHOTOS BY TOMMY TON, GQ, SARTORIALIST
There is no change without leaving your comfort zone.
But it doesn't have to be scary.
I teach my clients what I call "The Change Trick." It's a way of introducing something into their wardrobe—a new trendy item, a new color they thought they'd never wear, or an item they'd never considered before—little by little.
See how it works.
Think of it like experimenting with hot sauces. You wouldn't go straight from a mild hot sauce to a super hot ghost pepper sauce. I would try a little warmer than above and work my way up.
The same goes for trying something new with your style. You probably don't want to go from a black leather jacket to a neon green one. The next step would probably be a brown leather jacket.
Here's another example:
You want to use more colors and patterns for summer.
I'll start with a simple outfit: oxford linen shirt, navy blue pants, sunglasses, white tennis shoes. The color palette, while perfectly fine, feels a bit bland and confident. So we changed the shirt for something more colorful. We can follow two paths, a lighter color or a pattern/print.
While choosing a light blue shirt isn't that crazy, you can already see that it's a lot more colorful than the outfit we started with. With the print it looks even better and more summery.
But see how a simple change can change the whole mood of the outfit! This is really the key to using more colors. You don't have to wear a lot to brighten up your look.
As an initial recommendation, I always advise starting with only one trade per phase. If you feel more comfortable with some colors and patterns, go one step further.
Each time change another piece of your outfit for something lighter and more colorful. The nice thing is, if you feel like you've overstepped, you can always go back a level or two and still have a great outfit.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Think of something you want to add to your style that makes you stand out. How could you break it down and gradually introduce it into your closet with The Swap Trick? If you need a concrete example of how to use the swap trick for something like trends,Check out this post I wrote about Effortless Gent.
13. YOU DON'T START WITH TRUST, YOU BUILD IT
Think back to when you first started learning to drive.
You were probably scared.
I was sure that I would have an accident in the first 10 seconds after hitting the road.
You weren't sure. However, as he progressed, his confidence grew. Driving has become easier. Now you can illegally Snapchat on your phone while drinking your coffee and listening to the radio while moving your knee and still manage to work on a piece.
It's the same with your style.
you do not needstart with confidenceto improve your style. Your confidenceit grows as you work to improve your style.
Just like driving a car, the more you do it, the easier it gets.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Start with an outfit. just one Follow the advice in the tips above: stick to classic looks in neutral colors that work well. You will look and feel great. That quick win is important. Now use that feeling to continue. Then read the tip below to learn my favorite trick that will help you build confidence even faster.
14. USING MY FAVORITE TECHNIQUE TO FEEL CONFIDENT IN A NEW TEAM
This is a great technique to use in conjunction with the switch trick and is an excellent first date trick. In fact, it's something I wore when I first started dating my current girlfriend.
Whenever you're going on a date (or a conference, interview, or speaking event): wear the outfit you'll wear to the date a full day before the date.
Even if it's a classic outfit. Live your day as if it were any other day. Drink a coffee. To go shopping. go to work
What you are essentially doing is "penetrating" the garment. get used to using it.
I started doing this because I realized that when I got ready for a date, even in the clothes I had worn for years, I always felt uncomfortable on the date. I would be embarrassed. I would move a lot.
So one day I had a date right after work, since I didn't have time to go home and change, I put on my date outfit for work. By the time the date came around, I had spent an entire day in my date outfit and was feeling relaxed.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:Whether you've bought a new jacket or a whole outfit for a date, have fun running errands. Do you have a last-minute appointment or event and can't dedicate a whole day? I found that even wearing the outfit for a few hours beforehand helps.
Do you need date outfit ideas? Look at this post:"A beautiful woman lets you know how to dress (and what to do) on a first date"
15. SEEK HELP AND ADVICE FROM EXPERTS
According to the Mint, last year I spent $7,360 on books, courses, and counseling to improve my business skills, writing, and general knowledge of subjects that interest me, like philosophy.
Sounds like a lot, but ask yourself: How much does bad advice cost?
Imagine that you are the CEO of a company with a marketing budget of $25,000. You've read some advice from marketing forums full of anonymous authors. They decide to follow some of the advice and it backfires. You have now lost $25,000. Suddenly, investing $7,000 in a top specialist seems like a bargain.
How many months or even years will you waste following bad advice regarding your exercise routine? your finances? your style?
It is tweeted byamy hoysums it up perfectly:
When it comes to dressing, there are SO MANY options. From style blogs, instagram, reddit and youtube channels.
Some give good advice. Most are full of people who love to shop and like to talk about it online.
When it comes to style advice, it can be hard to separate the good from the bad.
As someone who has been doing this for over 11 years, I know how difficult it can be to pass on style advice. It is not the same to tell someone what to buy than to teach them how to comb their hair. Similarly, a chef who tells you to buy ingredients is not helping you learn technique.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY:When reading advice online, always consider the source. Do they dress well? More importantly, is it a style you want to adopt? If they are stylists or have products, what about their customers and readers? Good or terrible? Do they have a background in fashion or style, or are they "a normal guy like you"?
Once you find a specialist you have examined. You have two options:
Pay for your advice
That is the fastest way to learn. Whether it's a book they've written, a course they've created, or hiring them for a one-on-one interview. And although it is the fastest option, it is also the most expensive. This is my favorite way to learn since my time is limited. I can always get my money back, but one thing I don't get back is my time.
Contact them by email for advice.
On the other hand, this option is "free" but will require more time on your part. Before contacting an expert, you should do your homework.Experts tend to be busy people.Be sure to do your research beforehand to see if they have answered the questions you want to ask. Check out their blogs, twitter, see if they've been interviewed in a podcast or magazine. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please contact them. For that, I recommend reading this post:"How to get the attention of your favorite expert"
16. LEARN TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY NOT TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY (HAVE FUN, IT'S JUST CLOTHING)
I have a confession to make: I don't read fashion blogs.
Shocking right?
Sure, I check sites like Hypebeast and Gear Patrol to see what's new, but when it comes to blogs, forums, and industry news, I keep my head straight. There?
Well, for one thing, a lot of it is really boring. It doesn't help me in my work either.
I do a lot of research when it comes to finding out the pain guys go through when it comes to their style. I often come across forums where guys endlessly discuss selvedge and non-selvage denim, have lengthy discussions about the "death of the original style," and share their theories about what "DESIGNER X" was trying to express with their latest collection. .
One thing I realized after transitioning from menswear design to private personal stylist was that I learned to take it seriously enough not to take it too seriously.
Yes, great style can really make all the difference in your life. I have seen it first hand.
Amazing email from a client
A better style can make you take your job more seriously. It can make you an unforgettable brand. And yes! It will make you more attractive! (What woman doesn't want a well-dressed, successful man?)
But the last thing I want is for you to spend hours on forums discussing clothes.I'd rather you put on a great new outfit (you learned that from me of course), go out and live your life.Crush him at his job. Go on a big date.
To a good time.
Because if you don't enjoy dressing better, it won't last long.
BEING AWESOME STYLING IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK
In summary, make sure that:
buy suitable clothes- Solve 90% of your styling problems
Focus on the classics first- The classics are classics for a reason. They are proven essentials that look good on any man.
Stick to a neutral color palette- Neutral colors are automatically blended, so you don't have to worry about mixing colors. They make you look professional and masculine, and when you're ready to introduce more color into your wardrobe, they serve as the perfect backdrop.
